What is Online Foundation Degree

An Online Foundation Degree is for people who want to study for a higher education vocational qualification. It is for anyone who wants to improve his/her skills, understanding, and knowledge in order to progress in their careers. As such, studying for an online foundation degree can offer the learning and work-place experience to enhance your career, while it provide a very flexible way of learning, ie., studying at home that includes e-learning, on your job training.

Therefore many students study whilst they are employed in order to improve their skills and job prospects as Foundation Degrees integrate academic and work-based learning.

Online foundation degrees were established in 2001 by the Government. On admission to an online foundation degree, prior experience relevant to the degree is being taken into account and not the formal qualifications. As such they equip students with the knowledge, understanding and skills relevant to their employment.

On completion of a Foundation Degree, students have the opportunity to progress to a full Honours Degree with a further two years full-time study. Therefore, it is also possible for anyone, with further study, to convert a Foundation Degree into an Honours Degree.

Career Progression

A recent Destination of Leavers of Higher Education (DLHE) survey records that 12,645 graduates completed HNDs or Foundation Degrees in 2005, and 10,370 of them replied to the DLHE survey.

For the first time, substantial numbers of Foundation Degree graduates were recorded, with 5,090 graduates polled and 4,165 being included in this survey.

Overall, most graduates continued onwards to an honours degree - 36.2% followed this route, and with 30.8% working in the UK and 20.9% combining work and study, foundation and HND graduates had an unemployment rate of 3.7%, far lower than the average for first degree graduates (comparable with those first degree subjects which have the lowest unemployment rates).
